Bohemian Curtain Raphsody

Ever feel like a place is nice, but it's not really yours?  Well, we moved into our house in July of last year and, although it's felt more like home than any of the four houses we've lived in in the past six years (long story), it's still not quite "us".  Slowly, room by room and detail by detail, we are adding those personal touches that will stamp it as our own.

Months ago, I started looking for the right fabric to make into living room curtains.  When we moved in, there were two sets - one around the front picture window and one around the window at the end of the room.  They were yellow and drab and, after I realized that one set was "hemmed" using straight pins after X hid in them and poked himself, definitely needed to come down.

After many evenings of nursing a baby while searching for that perfect fabric online, I settled on some Amy Butler Charisma in Midnight from Hawthorne Threads and ordered it with the best of intentions of getting them done right away.

Months later, here we are.

We (Matt) took down the curtains and the brass rods. Replaced said brass rods with shiny new black ones. And put up the beautiful new panels I made.

Before.

Before.

New curtain rods.

After.

After.
We still have a lot of projects to go in the living room, but for now I'm happy with the extra colour and the light bohemian feel these add to the space.

Addicted to Fabric? New Giveaway on Twiddletails

If you're anything like me, you spend way too much time on online fabric shoppes coveting the collections that you want and cannot have.  A fellow/quilter blogger has a great giveaway going on over at Twiddletails for a HUGE package of scraps leftover from a quilt she just made.  The contest ends July 2, so hurry over to make sure you get your name in.

Fabric by Mail

Look what came in the mail this week!  One House and Home Subscription, one package of Heather Ross Far Far Away I purchased on Etsy and one fabric package via swap with a Flickr friend make for one happy girl.  Especially when that girl has been sicker than sick all week.  Here's hoping I feel better soon so I can get sewing!

Special Day for Dad and C and a Special Dress to Boot!

Two years ago on Mother's Day we had our first little bundle of joy dedicated at our church.  This year, it was C's turn on Father's Day.  What a wonderful way to celebrate the joy Matt brings as a father with the joy God brings us.

If you're wondering where I've been, I spent most evenings for the past week or so making the first garment I've sewn since high school fashion class.  I wanted C to have something extra special to wear for the occasion and decided on the Sis Boom Marissa pattern.  I will say that although I had to break out the seam ripper more than once and it took me almost 2 hours and four tries to get the gathering of the skirt, any shortfalls were my own and NOT the fault of the pattern.  I will definitely be making this dress again.

C's Sis Boom Marissa Dress

It came together quite easily and I love the flexibility of mixing fabrics and patterns with the straps and cummerbund.  If I had to do it all over again, I would have made the straps a little longer and gone a little easier on the glue stick application of the zipper.  A combination of my being overzealous and my not properly reading the pattern ended in a large quantity of glue being put where a zipper was not meant to be.  A bit of a sticky situation.

C Rocking the Marissa Dress

Love the contrasting straps and cummerbund.

For C's Marissa dress I chose to use some fabric from Amy Butler's Love Collection and couldn't have happier with the way it turned out.

So Pretty...*Sigh*

Just thought I would share this sneak peak of one of the WIPs I have going.  It makes me happy :)  Any guesses on what it might eventually be?

Oh...Deer!

Yesterday on a cool, rainy Monday while C napped...

X and I were enjoying some yummy lattes...

 Comparing latte 'staches...

And playing with play dough until...

A deer ran by our front window!  That's right, a deer!  If the neighbours didn't think I was crazy before, they do now!

After seeing a blur of white pass by the window and watching our dog go into "kill"mode (quite the feat for a little cairn terrier), I looked out the front door and saw an adorable little deer.  Then, like a crazed lunatic, I grabbed X and flew outside, both of us in our socked feet and me with camera in tow, and raced down the street as stealthily as possible with a two-year-old in tow while in your pajamas.  Turns out, that's not really possible.

We found the deer in our neighbour's backyard and I was about to get the best pic ever when, much to my dismay, I pushed the power button on the new camera instead of the shutter...If ever there were a case of clumsy thumbs, it was then.

So, instead, the best picture I got is the one above, as I was following the deer around the corner of our little, private side street onto a very popular main street, in socks and pajamas on a rainy day...

That crazy woman you saw with the camera...well, that was me.
